Actually it started on Monday. Does that seem a bit early? Well, probably so. But the girls have been asking and asking to start so why not accommodate? ("No! You absolutely CANNOT do any schoolwork until you finish playing on the beach!")
We are using the Calvert School's home school curriculum. You can click here to read about it: (

So far it's working quite well. It's a very comprehensive program- with pretty much everything you need included in the box. I like the way the lesson plans are really spelled out for me ("say this.... then show this, etc.") Plus, some of the course material for Sophie's First Grade is the same as what Maddie used at Alta Heights last year. For the last three days we've been doing school in the morning after breakfast. John has been teaching First Grade to Sophie in the cockpit and I've been teaching 2nd Grade to Madeleine in the salon. In addition to reading and writing there is science, art and social studies. Today Maddie learned about the Star Spangled Banner and the parts of plants. Sophie learned about the Pledge of Allegiance and about how scientists gather data. So far they're really loving it- but of course right now much of it is very easy review. Hopefully it will be some time before the novelty wears off!
