Revisiting the itinerary

The next few days are forecast to include off and on rain and northerly winds. Not ideal for a sail up the. Chesapeake. After talking to a couple of local sailors familiar with the. Chesapeake I have put together an alternate itinerary. We will make a final call tomorrow but this would give us three days to get to Herrington Harbor South rather than just two. We would need to do about 40 miles per day instead of 60 which gives us more options to tack our way north if the actual winds are as unfavorable as predicted. Sailors have to be flexible sometimes so this seems prudent under the circumstances even though it makes it impossible for Chris and I to spend Saturday sightseeing. There is so much interesting history in this are and we have read a lot about it in our book club. Jamestown, Yorktown and Fort Monroe are all within an hour's drive. Stay tuned.
Ok the weather forecast did not improve so we are going with Plan B. That means we leave tomorrow morning for Deltaville and then try to reach Solomon Island the next day and Herrington South the day after. The north winds will be a challenge but at least we will only be doing +/- 40 miles per day.
I met Chris at the airport around 4 pm. He got in 30 mins early and I had just returned the rental car so we got an Uber together to the marina. After a quick tour of Merry Mac and the marina Chris and I walked over to Fort Monroe for a quick walking tour. It’s a very interesting National Monument with contrasting messages. This is where the first Africans came to America and also where salves escaped to freedoms during the Civil War when the Union controlled the fort. Yet there is also an arch dedicated to Jefferson Davis - why? - because he was imprisoned here after the war. It was dedicated in 1955 and rededicated in 1986! Go figure. After the walk we had wine and cheese and crackers in the cockpit before heading out to grab dinner at Deadrise, the really nice seafood restaurant on the marina premises. We are crashing now but hope to be on the water tomorrow at 6:30.
