Merry Mac to Maine and Back to POW NY

New London to Block Island

At 7 am I said goodbye to Bruce and met Peter and Marcia at the gate to Crocker's Marina. By 7:15 we had shoved off from our slip and radioed the railroad bridge for an opening to leave Shaw's Cove. Our timing was unfortunate as two commuter trains were scheduled to pass over the next ten minutes. We rested in idle till the swing bridge could open to let us out into the Thames River. It was a beautiful clear day and warming up nicely as we put up the sails and turned into Fishers Island Sound. Unfortunately we had very little wind for the next several hours but a favorable current to help us get through the Sound and past Taylor Swift's house at Watch Hill. Peter had the binoculars out searching but no sighting of the superstar was recorded. Once we got into the Block Island sound the SW winds began to pick up enough that we could kill the engine and actually sail. It was slow at first (2-3 kts) but as the morning turned to afternoon the winds kept building and by the time we reach BI around 2:00 pm we were above 5 kts. It worked out beautifully that we had the afternoon for a long bike ride around the island. Without any clouds in the sky we got to see parts of the island I had never visited before. We had a wonderful time. Eventually we stopped at Spring Hill House for a late lunch on the veranda overlooking the Eastern side of the island and the waters as far as Point Judith and Martha's Vineyard. Gorgeous. We peddled on into New Shorem for some shopping and then back to our marina. We returned the extra bike we had rented and went for a swim and shower. Unfortunately I couldn’t find my glasses when I emerged from the shower. Turns out I had swum in the pool with them on, they had fallen off me and another swimmer had found them and turned them in. When the other guy heard me searching for them he told me he had given them to the attendant who immediately gave them to me. What a relief! We were going to get dinner at the Atlantic Inn but called for a reservation and learned it was closed. It is no longer summer hours here at BI and Champlin's is virtually empty. We went instead to The Oar which is close to the marina so we walked there instead. We had a really good meal with generous portions and good cocktails. A place to remember! Then Back to Merry Mac and a chance to hear the first hour of the Presidential debate before crashing for the night. Tomorrow on to Montauk.
