Northport on Grand Traverse Bay
12 July 2010
Well the weather report was right, little to no wind. We motored from Leland to Grand Traverse Bay. Instead of Charlevoix, we went to Northport Marina. We decided with it being the weekend, the problems we had with the noise from the Power Boaters and that Charlevoix is a bigger town and Katie liking the smaller towns that we would check out Northport. It turned out to be a good choice. Northport is a very small quite little town. The marina is older but still is nice. No sooner had we pulled into our slip and tied up the folks next to us introduced themselves. It is nice to have friendly neighbors. We haven't had that since we were in Pentwater and Katie was starting to feel a little lonely. Jeff just isn't able to keep Katie entertained enough. She needs to have that company of other folks for conversation.
We were able to walk through the shops in Northport in one afternoon. There aren't many which is ok. They all start to be the same after awhile. We did find some material about some things to do in the area though and planned another bike ride. This time we are only going to be going 16 miles round trip and no other rides afterwards. Before that though we went for a walk to a hill that overlooks Traverse Bay. It is also used as a sledding hill for the local kids. It would be a fun ride. It is almost the size of Olympia Ski hill in Oconomowoc.
We rode our bikes to the Grand Traverse Bay Northern Light house. It is at the Northern tip of the bay facing Fox Island. If it hadn't been such a hot day the ride would have been a bit nicer but it wasn't too bad. Some of the ride is right along the shore of the bay. There are lots of real nice lake cottages. The light house was very interesting. The people working at it are able to stay right at the light house. The others we have visited, the keepers stayed off site. It would be a neat one to work at. You are in a state park and there are campers there. It would be interesting to see the different weather conditions as they come in from up in the tower. It is also a great spot to watch sunrises and sunsets. There is a lot of boat traffic that goes by also. Most Great Lakes shipping that goes on in Lake Michigan will pass by here. The best part of this ride was the dip in the lake after we got back. It was windy today which made the ride a little more challenging. We had to pedal down the hills as the wind wouldn't let us coast. That also blew the warm water out of the bay so our dip was real refreshing.
Once we got back to the boat Jeff set up the hammock we had bought in Ludington for Katie to take a nap in. We suspended it from the spinnaker pole on the front of the boat. Some time when we are anchored out we will swing it out over the side of the boat. Jeff can then crank it up higher with the winches. Of course Katie will then have to plead with Jeff to get down. It is a comfy spot to nap. We had a nice quite Sunday night in Northport. We had received a phone call from our Cheese maker son Bill when we were having lunch at the Light house today. He just accepted a job as the head cheese maker at a Dairy in Ohio. They supply milk to the Washington DC marketplace and they would like to start marketing cheese. He will be moving in early August. It sounds like we might be making a road trip soon. We are excited for him as this is something he has been interested in for quite awhile. Congratulations Bill.
