Jeff has been busy ordering parts, waiting for parts, returning wrong parts sent from Georgia, studying the manuals, and working on the boat to correct problems that have been ongoing nuisances. Rich, one of the owners here at Thunder Bay Shores Marina, has been most helpful in figuring out what needs to be done, what parts to order, and guiding Jeff through the processes for repairs and maintenance he was unfamiliar with. The wiring harness has been replaced and hopefully that will take care of a number of our issues from the boat not starting reliably to the alternator not recharging the batteries. The packing gland was replaced in the steering quadrant shaft to reduce the amount of water entering the bilge. We had the guys here change the oil and Jeff has done some other tinkering to tighten up and secure various systems. We have had time to complete other small projects including installing rope clutches on the mast, attaching the lift harness to the outboard motor, placing lettering with the boat name on the life ring, and better organizing things below deck. Since St Ignace, we had been experiencing some difficulties with the refrigerator not staying cool. Upon investigation, it appeared there were poor seals on the refrigerator and freezer resulting in major ice buildups which prevented the fan from circulating the cool air. Jeff rode his one speed clown bike all over Alpena searching for better gasket material. He found several different things to try so we defrosted both and replaced the sealing gaskets hoping to get a better seal and improved refrigeration. Our self defrost freezer goes by the name of Katie and she gets really crabby when she has to defrost the freezer every week! We're planning on setting sail again later this morning, headed towards Caseville, MI where we will be meeting our former Delafield neighbors, Jan and Jerry Madynski at their cottage. Hopefully, some of the gremlins have been banished and we'll have more reliable systems and a smooth running vessel as we sail on.
