HAWKSBILL CAY
10 March 2013 | EXUMA ISLANDS
LYNN/70's
March 10 - 12
Sun - Tues
We usually wake to the sun, but having set our clocks ahead due to daylight savings, it is dark out this morning.
We depart the anchorage at 9:00 a.m. and as we near Shroud Cay in the Exuma Land and Sea Park, we can see at least 10 masts in the distance. They are presumably on the park mooring balls. We have been trying to contact the Park on VHF Channel 9 in order to get on the waiting list for a mooring ball at Warderick Wells, but are not within range.
We decide to go past Shroud to Hawksbill Cay and in the distance see 4 masts and a big motor yacht moored in the north anchorage. We carry on to the south anchorage and find seven empty mooring balls! A few other boats arrive before our buddy boats, but we all manage to get a mooring ball. (In retrospect, this would also have been a great place to anchor.) Rather than leaving our $20 per night in the mailbox on the beach, we prefer to pay when we get to the park headquarters at Warderick Wells.
We have motor sailed again, with both sails up in light easterly winds and covered 19 miles in 3 hours. (We can make 7.0 knots if we motor sail versus 3.0 knots if by sails alone).
This is a beautiful place with several soft powdery beaches to choose from. The aqua/green colour of the gin clear water is amazing! We spent Sunday afternoon and Monday exploring, walking a rugged trail to some ruins and the windy (Exuma Sound) side of the island and, of course, held two Happy Hours on the beach.
We have finally been able to contact the Warderick Wells Headquarters via VHF radio and are all on the waiting list for tomorrow for a mooring ball. Due to another forecasted north front, we prefer the west mooring field called Emerald Rock.
Stay tuned,
Lynn, Co-Captain
