Winter in Boot Key Harbour, Marathon, Fl
07 March 2017 | Boot Key Harbour
Lynn/windy, partly sunny
The weather down here has been quite nice all winter, with the exception of one or two windy, rainy fronts that typically lasted one or two days. The temperatures have been in the seventies and eighties fahrenheit. A lot of sunny days which makes our new solar panels work optimally.
Aside from the weather, we have enjoyed new friendships and old ones!
We have really pushed ourselves to walk a couple of miles every day and feel much better for it. We have also enjoyed doing Yoga two to three times per week.
We’ve also enjoyed some of the best talent and entertainment in the local bars and restaurants, such as Drop Dead Dangerous, Ty & Corey, Fiddle Rock, to name a few and Michael McLeod and Captain Carl Peachy (seen in Key West when our friends Vernon and Rose drove us down).
The Marathon Community Park, right next door to the City Marina has hosted events and festivals like the Celtic Fest, Beatlemaniax, the Pigeon Key Arts Festival.
And then I caught a cold! After a few days I thought it had run it’s course, but it rebounded and lasted for 2 weeks.
Last week, on the tail end of my cold, we rented a car and drove up to Clearwater to help Brian’s parents sort and pack and vacate their condo. We all had to spend two nights in two separate hotels (with pools) until their flight home, but Brian and I got security clearance to escort them right to the boarding gate. They made it back home safe and sound where they both wanted and need to be!
Upon our return from Clearwater, the weather decided to take a turn. We have had unusually strong winds of 25-30 mph for almost four days! Although we are quite comfortable on the boat, going ashore in the dinghy is a bit of a wet ride!
Since our return, there is a lot of excitement going on around here as people get together to discuss travel across to the Bahamas during the next weather window. We will not be going this year, but hope to make it across next year.
My sister, Dana will be arriving from Miami tomorrow and will stay on MIDORI for two nights before moving to the Banana Bay Resort which is walkable from Boot Key City Marina.
She will be here during the Marathon Seafood Festival which is usually a very good time with lots of vendors, local fresh seafood and great musical entertainment. She hopes we will come over to the hotel and make use of her pool and the answer is yes!
After the festival, we will start looking for a weather window back up the West coast of Florida to the Charlotte Harbour Boat Storage.
It usually takes us two weeks to get the boat put away, but we will once again have access to our car and will still have some time to enjoy Florida before the five day drive back home.
Stay tuned,
First Mate Lynn and
Captain Brian
