From Trash To Treasures..........
20 May 2015
We've spent a few days north of Georgetown at a marina, Emerald Bay. Nice marina owned by Sandals Resort, FREE washers & dryers, free internet, nice clubhouse. We went to the marina because of a potential tropical storm, which did not develop fortunately in our area. We met up with some cruisers from Kemah and enjoyed a Kentucky Derby party at the club house.
While at the marina, we were boarded by the Royal Defense. They made us aware that our fishing permit had expired March 1, 2015 & we could be thrown in jail if caught fishing.
Once weather had cleared, we headed back to Georgetown & visited the Custom's Office & had the permit extended. We had renewed our immigration papers approx. 30 days prior & asked specifically about our "expired" fishing permit & both Customs & Immigration told us we were good for a year. We asked several times & was assured we were OK.....
We then headed back to the Jumento's & Raggeds, our favorite Cays, thus far. Friends from Kemah on Stephanie Dawn, Rick & Sandra, joined us. Most days, only 2 other boats were in the areas where we were anchored. We spent most days snorkeling, spear fishing, & looking for treasures on the beaches (more about that later) Mike helped reduce the population of the unwanted lion fish. He managed to spear over 25. We had several good days of fishing and had several good meals on fresh fish.
We stopped in to see Edward again in Buena Vista. Edward has been practicing on the harmonica Mike gave him previously & they had a small jam session.
Trash to treasures.....Sandra & I felt we hit the jackpot one afternoon while exploring a remote beach that faces the Atlantic/Crooked Island Passage. Unfortunately lots of trash, mainly plastics & lots of flip flops, drift to the Bahama Islands from South America. We were searching for "Sea-beans", which are popular to collect. They are a bean from trees & vines that grow along the tropical shores & rain forests all over the world. The beans fall into waterways U& drift through inlets to reach the ocean. The beans float & are found on the shores. Jewelry can be made with the sea-beans. (thinking about you Jan Eilers)
We will leave Georgetown in the next few days & head over to Cat Island & Eleuthera. We've not been there yet and look forward to exploring those islands.
