Eleuthera Island
11 June 2015
After leaving Hal Moon Cay, Stephanie Dawn & we traveled over to Eleuthera Island. We stayed at a marina on the south end of the island, Davis Harbour, to wait for a storm to pass. We rented a car for a day & traveled part of the island. It was a rainy day & we were disappointed not to be able to catch the islands Pineapple festival. Pineapple is grown on the island. We did buy local pineapple at a roadside stand & it was amazing, as good as pineapple in Hawaii. After a week in the marina, we traveled up to Rainbow Cay & anchored in a nice protected cove. We Snorkeled some and hiked over to the Atlantic side, getting in some much needed exercise. Walking back we were looking for a place to grab a beer and ran across Rainbow Inn. It was a Monday & the sign said they were closed on Mondays until dinner. The owner saw us & came out & wanted to know if we were needing to make reservations for dinner, as it was the famous Monday night "brick oven pizza". We inquired on how to get our dinghy over to the restaurant & he offered to come get us & bring us back when we were finished. The restaurant was packed for dinner & the pizza was great. Owners Zev & Richard are wonderful folks.
We then traveled through Current Island Cut to Royal Island for 2 nights. Nice protected cove, which had 7 boats first night and just us & Stephanie Dawn the 2nd night. We explored the island, which was a former elegant private estate of a doctor in the 50's & developers (jack Nichols & roger Staubach) tried to change into a resort with villas, golf course & Marina. In 2010, work was stopped but there is a small staff employed by the bank to monitor security of the resort. Very pretty place.
Mike & I were enjoying our morning coffee in the cockpit one morning when we heard Sandra on Stephanie Dawn screaming. Rick jumped in their dinghy & was circling their boat. We thought their cat had jumped in the water. We jumped in our dinghy & ran over to find out that a 3' snake had been in their cockpit. Sandra had come out to enjoy her coffee, pulled the cockpit cushion to a snake hissing at her. Rick managed to knock the snake off theboat but the persistent of the snake continued, by attempting to climb up the bough lines. Between Mike & Rick chopping their oars at the snake, he finally cercum to snake heaven. And you thought all cruisers did was sip their coffee & wine & watch sunrises & sunsets!
We are now in Spanish Wells, which since we crossed over to the Bahamas, has the flare of a tourist town. Lots of Americans on vacation, even meeting a couple at dinner from Tulsa.
Spanish Wells is famous for its fishing, which supplies over half of the bahamas commercial lobster, conch & fish. The community is tidy & colorful, most everyone travels by golf carts. We are currently on a mooring ball waiting for winds to settle down & then we will head for the Abacos.
