Greg and Mary
Hi,
We waited 3 days at West End before we had a weather window that we liked. We met up with another couple with the same Catalina 400 as ours. We had met Kate and Terry at the Harborage Marina before we started. They had left a month earlier and were planning to return the same time we were. We left the Bahamas on Thursday April 24th and had a wonderful Gulf stream crossing arriving at Riviera Beach Marina that evening. This is where we had originally purchased the boat so it was like coming home. We spent an extra day there do do some fix up and get through customs. We left early Sat. morning (before sunrise) and motor sailed 75 miles to No Name Harbor in Key Biscayne south of Miami. The next day we sailed to Rodriquez Key and then to Marathon in the keys. Here we went under the 7 mile bridge to the Shark River in the Everglades National park. We anchored with about 1' of water underneath us. Greg checked the tide charts and decided no problem we were at low tide and it will only rise. Mary checked the tides and found out I was looking at someplace else and we had 2 hours to low tide with a 2 ft drop. Greg quickly ate crow and we picked up the anchor to find a little deeper water. When we anchored we had a nice breeze but it soon died and the biting bugs came out in force. Not a fun night and we made a hasty exit the next morning and spent the next two days at Marco island. Three days later after traveling though some nasty thunder showers we reached our final destination at the Harboarge Marina in St. Petersburg. The next two weeks were spent getting the boat cleaned and ready for Hurricane season.
May 15 we left our boat home and started for our summer home in Colorado.
