Final destination for this winter

30 March 2015 | Puerto Del Ray Marina, P.R.
winds 15-20
We got up early and watched the sun rise. My goal is to get to the Marina at a decent time so I can get checked in. We pull up the anchor and off we go.

The night had been little rocky with some unexpected middle of the night noises. The wind had shifted and the stern of the boat was now directly into the swells. On swell smack the boat so hard that I thought the anchor had broken free and we were hitting “Livin Life.” I fly out of bed with Dylan right at my heals. He thought we had just run aground. We checked depth and we still had 8’ under neath us and the anchor chain was hanging straight down. It had not moved at all. It is those unexpected sounds that can wake you up so fast but all well that’s ends well.

We are off and the seas are pretty smooth. We look up at the wind vane and something is wrong. It is pointing in a direction that shows we can actually raise the sails and use the wind instead of fighting it. It has been over 7 day since we have had favorable winds. We are so excited. The sails go up and the motor gets turned off. It is fantastic with us traveling an average of 6 knots. Soon we have dolphins playing at our bow. What fun.

What a great way to end this part of the trip. We arrive at Puerto Del Ray Marina around 2:30 after a fun day of sailing. The marina gives us our slip number and we are off to find it. This is a big marina with over 1000 slips so us finding the right slip is 1 chance in a thousand. We see dock 10 right away and think this is way to easy. Steering Mile High Dream down the fairway we realize that we are on the wrong side of dock 10. We need to be on the other side. One way to get 1000 slips in a marina is to make the fairways very small. Let try to parallel park a 40’ boat and then back it out. So close to that cold were here beer yet so far away.

We get backed out and turned around, find our slip ready to pull in only to find someone’s dingy is in the way. Back out we go with Dylan and Ted pushing me off the other boats since the wind decided to pick up and push us where we do not want to go. The third time was the charm and we got settled and had a celebratory beer. We had done it. We reached our final destination.

Off to the office and two hours later(they were a little busy) I am finally checked in.

Time to make flight arrangements for Ted and Dylan. Fo me it is time to get the boat back in shape after being a bachelor pad for 2 weeks.

About: Greg has been sailing since he was 21. I grew up in North Dakota and started taking advantage of the constant winds. After selling my bicycle store in 2006 we got more serious about living our dream on a sailboat. Greg and his wife purchased Mile High Dream in 2013.
Greg and Mary had owned Nada Mas, a 23' South Coast, on Lake Dillon in Colorado for 33 years. We chartered in the Caribbean and Calif. numerous times. We were excited to begin our dream. While waiting for a weather window in the Truks and Caicos, Mary died unexpectedly Jan. 6 2015 after a [...]
