Ensenada
05 February 2020 | Marina Cruise Port
Chip | Cold but sunny
3 days in Ensenada turned to 5 as we wait for good weather and explore the town which has changed since our last visit. The port is booming with container ship after ship coming in to unload - my guess is the seemingly high activity may be related to tariffs. I really have nothing to base that on other than a couple of friends who work for very large international companies telling me they were doing their best to avoid unnecessarily paying those charges (ie shipping to US ports products bound for Mexico as an example). There was also a constant stream of cruise ships - pretty much every other day. On the off days its fun to walk around the calm streets - on cruise ship day the place is alive; barkers, hawkers and beggars swarming the previously quit streets. Remarkable to see frankly (no mom and 3 kids plopped on the sidewalk selling chiclets one day and dozens the next....). Hussong’s hasn’t changed but our favorite taco shop next door has new owners - same great food but no beer. Sadly, unless that changes, the 2 hardworking lady owners won’t last.... My haircut place also disappeared but we found “barber shop” row and was able to get a great cut and straight razor shave for 12 dollars including tip. My barber, Aldo, had gotten the tattoos shown above the day before - he cuts hair while also attending the local University. All in all Ensenada was a good stop - off to Turtle Bay on Friday which will be our first of 2 overnight legs.
