Waiting out the wind
28 March 2020 | Isla Carmen, Ballandra
Chip | Windy,
We moved early Thursday morning to the Ballandra anchorage on Isla Carmen to hide out from a predicted wind event. The first and last time we were in this anchorage was 10 years ago. 2 significant memories of the place:; 1) we were chased out by bees seeking fresh water (it really was an unbelievable experience) and 2) it was the last time I saw a cruising friend alive (she died from cancer about a year or so later, RIP Laura). Ballandra is a very nice anchorage positioned to provide wind shelter for all directions but W or WSW - the forecast is calling for several days of N and NNW winds gusting to 25 to 30. Forecast was been spot on. There are 8 other boats here - all sailboats. We're in 10 to 16' of water with 120' of chain out. Thankful it's holding well. Wind has hit 30 a few times and we do get a little wave wrap into the anchorage but it's very tolerable. The higher wind and breaking waves on the beach have confined us to the boat resulting in the Admiral creating a to do list for poor old Chip. In addition to repacking a rudder post (my list) and adjusting another, I have cleaned the shower sump (should be immune to the CoronaVirus now...), disassembled and repaired the Admiral's vacuum cleaner (second round of virus immunization measures....), and endured a new game everyday (the Admiral has a running list of who wins each day - I can only imagine what the ultimate winner will likely impose upon second place....). Actually it's kinda fun. Probably be here for another couple of days - haven't decided on the next stop just yet. All is good in Baja Sur! Stay healthy my friends!
