Number 5

Being in the Sea of Cortez is our number 5 pick simply because it's so awesome. The people in the bigger cities (Los Cabos, La Paz, Loreto, Santa Rosalia), small villages (Agua Verde, Santispac), the panganeros and everyone we ran into were just wonderful. Even the "Coast Guard" crews coming through the various anchorages blaring the "stay at home" message were great! While the people are indeed a big part of this place, as I said, we didn't interact with many. So the Sea makes the list for more than it's wonderful people - the place is simply off the hook beautiful. Today typifies each day over the few months. Up at 0600 (that's when us seniors get up!) to see the sky beginning to turn a brilliant pink as the sun rises in the distance. Look across the bay toward Loreto to see towering rugged mountains lining the Sea of Cortez. Jump in the inflatable at 0845 to head out to our favorite dive spot on a reef in this National Park where it is absolutely like swimming in an aquarium. There are tropical fish of every size, shape and color basking in the sunshine now that the sun has peaked over the cliffs on this island to illuminate the water. Today we found a small cave with some of the largest Lobster I've ever seen (no we did not take one nor did we grab a piece of the beautiful coral), saw a dozen different kinds of starfish and even swam briefly with a Seahorse! Upon returning to Victoria we were swarmed by dolphin cruising about enjoying breakfast and putting on an "aerial" show for us - the only boat in this anchorage. After lunch we were visited by the Bat Rays - jumping, flipping and slapping their "wings" on the water. Go to bed around 11 (we're binging Game of Thrones...) after looking at a sky with so many stars it boggles the mind! The Milky Way brightly shinning across the sky, the Big Dipper so bright it reflects in the glass-like ocean water, turning on the underwater lights to see thousands of fish swarming around the boat (why Lobster Jack cannot catch one fish is just a mystery...). Sleep soundly with the boat gently rocking in the small swell. Pretty much every day is like that. Easily a top pick!
