Hi all,

Today has been uneventful, hot and humid, but beautiful. The main story of the day is that while there is some minor wind, it has been coming from the wrong direction, so we have been mostly running under engine power since yesterday. We did get about eight hours today with no engine, but we were going so slow, we felt like we would be out here forever so finally started the engine. All of this is a result of us being in the ITCZ and the doldrums. From the forecasts we are getting from PredictWind (and not our weather guru), we will be under engine power all night and until about noon tomorrow (when we reach 10 degrees north latitude). At that time we believe we will start picking up some mild winds from the northeast, which will allow us to finally turn northwest to start a course to Hawaii - first to the southwest tip of the Big Island and then around it with another 160 mile run into Honolulu. Hallelujah!

We had no rain today, but late this afternoon, like every afternoon, squalls form on the horizon and absolutely dump rain - just not on us!! Now that I know I can add pictures to my blog post I have included a photo I took late this afternoon of one squall to the northwest of us about 10 miles away. It is pretty clear that it is dumping a solid wall of water on the area below it. They are pretty impressive to see, particularly when we are about to go into one. They are often accompanied by high winds around the edges, so when we see one that is imminent, we reef the sails and start the engine just as a matter of caution. So far, though, most have missed us.

We are really looking forward to exiting the ITCZ and picking up the Eastern Trade Winds. The forecast is showing that they will be strong in the 15 to 20 and 25 knot speed, with gusts to 30. That will feel so good and we will start to make significant speed for the remainder of the week, after Tuesday.

I will say good night now and shower so I can lay down in my bed and sweat until my watch starts at 2:00 am. The heat and humidity is another reason we can't wait to pick up the Eastern Trades!!!

Richard
