The Vaipo waterfall is spectacular enough by itself, but the walk there follows an ancient Marquesian stone road and passes by many overgrown paepae on the way. We were told that at one time more than 3000 people lived in the area. Now there are maybe thirty people living in the bottom of the valley. Their homes and fruit plantations line the old stone road along the first part of the waterfall hike.
