A night of learning

Mandy / Still Cold
After tucking up in a warm bed we were awoken in the early hours of the morning with the wind whipping up. It was at 3.30am that I began to understand the importance of setting a good anchor. I now understand why we lay down so much anchor chain. For my non boating blog followers the ratio is 5:1 (ie we lay down 5 metres of chain for every 1 metre above the high tide). It is also important to understand windage and tidal movement as they all played a part of the 3.30am lesson! Watching all the boats dance around like drunken ballerinas was quite educational! Anyway we pulled up on our anchor chain so that we had less swing room and tucked up back in bed for another couple of hours sleep. This morning we made passage for Sheridan Flats which is notorious for being very shallow and narrow. We didn't have any problems except that it was still so cold at 10am.....thank goodness for Aldi ski gear and touch screen gloves. We are anchored tonight off Big Woody Island near Hervey Bay and will head for Bundaberg tomorrow, hopefully it warms up or we will need a rum toddy!
