14 August 2013 | Kupang, Indonesia
We left Port Moresby under 25+ knots and confused seas....everybody did (5 boats)! Eventually, they smoothed out & we had a nice passage from the Torres Straits to Kupang, Indonesia. We stopped 2 days at Cape Wessel, Australia due to 30+ knot winds and 5 meter seas. It was good a decision since my Dengue Fever continued to get in the way of my fun! The total passage was 10 days with stops in the Torres & Cape Wessel.
Arrival into Kupang was August 1st around 7:30 am. We had arrived. The rally we joined is called Sail Komodo (after the Komodo Dragons in Central Indo). & consists of 80 boats. Check out Sail Indonesia.com for extra info. We got checked in by officials & joined the festivities....the events never stopped the whole time we were there! Tours, welcome ceremonies, happy hours, old friends and new friends, custom dances and dinners. The welcome was intense and out-right friendly. Indonesia is the best place we've ever visited. One of the tours was to the highlands & King's palace of the providence. An all day affair, on rutted roads and a bumpy bus but fabulous. The night market with fresh seafood proved to temping to pass up. Things are so cheap here, a dinner will cost about $8-10 with beer for 2. Go all out & it's about $20 for 2 people. The exchange rate is crazy. One U.S. dollar = $10,000 Rupriahs....whoa - move over the decimal a few zeros & it gets easier. So $2,000R = 20 cents! Hard to wrap your head around at first. Once everybody got checked in there was several routes to take. We decided on the road less traveled...... Wini & Grupita. They had never had yachts or visitors before. So 18 boats headed off to Wini.....
