Day 51 - August 20th 2011 - New York - 40 47.355N:73 59.060W
Up early and off in full sun with no clouds and a flat sea. Over into the East river, today we are going against the tide, are we mad, no Moma can do it. This is so exciting arriving in New York by boat. As we motored along the tide got stronger and by the time we got to Hell Gate we were only making 2knots over ground. One boat going the other way radioed Doug to say that he hoped we had a good engine. Eventually we approached the bottom of Manhatten, there she stood in all her glory, the Statue of Liberty, hooray we made it this far. We increased to 5 knots round into the Hudson River and along the shoreline up to 79th Street Marina where we picked up a mooring ball. This marina is close to Central Park, shopping and the underground. Went ashore for a walk, it was hot and sticky. A few blocks along Broadway and then over into Central Park, as it was Saturday the park was packed and lots to see. We only were able to walk half of the park and then back to the marina to meet Tim for supper. Tim took us on the subway to Times Square which was 10 times larger than the last time I was in New York and so exciting, it was a beautiful evening, calm and warm. Then a taxi ride to Hell's Kitchen and a very cheap but delicious dinner in a lovely Italian Restaurant a little bit of walking around then took the underground back to 79th street. Do not like having to get in the dinghy late at night and negotiating rough water back to the boat but you have to get there. The current and tide along the Hudson River clash when the tide changes, the boat sits still and the ball hits the hull which is a bit disconcerting, even so we had a good sleep.
Day 52 - August 21st 2011 - New York
Second day here, Carol leaves today. Doug decided to change the alternator while we went ashore to do two loads of laundry. Carol and I went to the café overlooking the marina for brunch waiting for Doug. When he arrived we walked her to the subway to say our goodbyes. Got back to the laundry only to find that the dryer was not working very well so we took the damp laundry back to the boat, I hung it all over the place and then we grabbed a taxi and off to visit the Intrepid (aircraft carrier) and the Growler (submarine) we really enjoyed both, would rather do this than look at shops. Hailed another taxi and over to the Twin towers site, by now it had started to rain and we were not dressed for the cool front that came through so I hailed another taxi, I am good at this, third time and have got the first taxi coming our way each time. Back to the marina for a margarita at the Café and then back to the dinghy. Still raining, I hate this part, dinghy wet, no raingear, wind, rough water, are we having fun yet. While Doug put up the enclosure in the cockpit, I made dinner and moved laundry around. Off to watch TV and fall asleep, another good day but feet very tired.
