Day 80 – September 18th 2011 – Charleston – 32 46.654N:79 57.338W
We left Georgetown fairly early our normal 07.30 and tootled along through mostly marsh lands all day. Read a lot, I have read more on this trip than have in years, actually dropped off six books to a marina the other day and picked up a few more. Passed a few inlets where we could see the ocean and big surf but not very many channel marks, we actually were thinking sailing along the coast would be nice today but we read that the entrances are not recommended without local knowledge. While waiting for the Isle of Palms swing bridge to open up, we could hear another sailboat on the radio heading North and they were from Canada. The first sailboat we have seen in days and it was from Vancouver. While waiting I prepared the remainder of the shrimp and we ate them before arriving in Charleston fairly late after a long day, were not quite sure where the best place to be was so we toured around a bit, eventually ended up at the mooring field and anchored for the night.
Day 81 – September 19th 2011 - Charleston -
Second day in Charleston, sun shining, hooray the weather has been overcast for four days. Doug wanted to go to a marina on the other side of Charleston, it was supposed to be closer to the old town and also to the Sail repair shop. So he pulled the anchor up and we motored over to Charleston Maritime Centre. We called the sail repair shop and found that it was back on the other side where we were anchored, oh well we will drop off the gib tomorrow, it has to have the sunbrella re-stitched, poor gib has taken a beating on this trip. After chatting to a few of the live aboards in this marina we headed off to town to be tourists. We have been told by many friends and people we have met along the way that this town was a great place to visit, well they were all right. We had a great day; we took a buggy ride with two lovely mules through the old town, enjoyed the market area and had margarita’s at a bar in a converted church. This was a lovely last city for us to visit before heading home and maybe the best one of the whole trip. When we got back to the boat, we took down the gib and took off the sail cover as we need a new one. Will drop them off in the morning and then we will head north and back to Osprey, our trip is nearly over.
