Another Night in the Calabah Anchorage

15 April 2020 | Calabash River Anchorage Mile 341.9

April 15, 2020 Wednesday

A storm came through again in the early hours and dumped rain and wind on us until ten thirty the next morning. To get to the next anchorage will take a full day and we have two inlets to cross that always have shoaling issues. As we try to decide to head north or stay anchored in the Calabash River, we knew we had to figure on the wind that was blowing out of the north gusting to thirty knots. The temperature was in the fifties. We decided to stay at anchor where we were reasonably protected from the north.

We spent the day reading and talking to family as my sister’s fight with cancer unfolded up in New Hampshire. It was a long hard day just waiting to hear if the end had come, she was down to pain medication and fluids and the doctors had already expected her to have died. Given how tough my sister is none of us were surprised to see her holding on but we knew she must be in great pain and we felt awful about it.

The sun finally broke through just before sunset and while it never warmed up, we did have a nice couple of hours to pray in the cockpit before the cold drove us below to the cabin.
