November 17, 2020 Tuesday

I hadn’t planned carefully enough to have plenty of time to get the ninet o’clock opening of the Ben Sawyer Bridge so when we pulled the anchor at eight, I had to give it all the power I could to make the opening. In the eight miles to the bridge on the ICW the currents changed direction several times as we passed creeks and inlets and each time the GPS would indicate different arrival times.

It was a sunny day with a south wind on our nose but at one point I was able to get some help from the head sail which made enough difference to get to the bridge on time and at 9:03am the bridge opened and we passed on through. We heard on the radio after we passed that the bridge maintenance team had shown up and the next opening wouldn’t be until eleven! Nice we made it because now we could get to the marina on the slack tide. The marina has a very strong tidal current and docking with the current is not fun.

Once settled in the marina we took a walk around the City of Charleston enjoying a beautiful day and had a very good lunch at Saffron Bakery and Café. We admired all the lovely pastries but resisted the temptation but agreed we would be back in the morning for croissants.

We stopped in a new/used book store called Blue Bicycle Books and we purchased three books. It was an interesting store with a fun collection.

Back at the marina we did laundry but we had to leave the clothes in the dryer at six when they locked the doors. Sharon was not happy with the idea of a bunch of wrinkled laundry in the dryer over night but such is the challenges of travel by boat. Like the fact that with the Covid Pandemic showers and bathrooms are closed and unrelated to the pandemic the wi-fi signal doesn’t work on the boat. All small problems I know but I wanted to share so you wouldn’t think we were getting spoiled.

Sharon reheated the leftover pork chops for dinner in the pressure cooker and they were just as good as they had been last night.
