Charleston Bike Ride

Charleston Market

November 19, 2020 Thursday

The weather continued to warm and the wind was finally moderating. We took the bikes for a long ride through the streets of Charleston stopping for lunch at the Brown Dog Deli which was a great find. We had some She Crab Soup to share and then we each had a very good sandwich. We ate outside in the back in a funky courtyard surrounded by three story brick buildings. The interior of the Deli had old albums and rock posters decorating the walls from the bands of the sixties and there were lots of locals eating which in a tourist town is a good sign for a lunch spot.

After more bike riding to admire the architecture of Charleston’s old homes we ended up back at Monarch to have showers and get dressed for a fancy dinner out. The first three restaurants I tried to get a table at were full (reduced tables available) but the fourth was Anson’s for seven. Walking to dinner we stopped for a drink at Zero’s Inn and Restaurant to see one of the places where we hadn’t been able to get a table at and had a glass of wine on the second-floor porch.

We strolled down the old streets to Anson street and the restaurant where we ate upstairs with only a couple of the tables occupied. We had the green fried tomatoes for an appetizer and then I had the classic shrimp and grits while Sharon had a piece of swordfish on grits and we shared a bottle of white wine from the Russian River area. This was our first formal dinner out since before the pandemic hit. Our thirty-fifth wedding was celebrated over take out food, good but still it was takeout. This meal was delicious and we toasted the many people who we have lost over the last year and to several others that we miss seeing these days.

After dinner on the stroll home we picked up a pint of ice cream at Harris Teeters and enjoyed a cone of ice cream back on board. A pleasant way to end a lovely evening.
