Tasman Island and Fortesque Bay

24 February 2011 | Tasman Island
Paul
After a quiet stay at Port Arthur we rounded Tasman Island with little wind and a reasonable sea running. There is a light house and houses on top of this island - unbelievably rugged place. We spoke to a cray fisherman later who said that he never goes anywhere near Tasman Island and Port Arthur because it is usually very rough. We anchored for the next couple of nights at Forteque Bay only a few miles north of the island.

Fortesque is a beautiful and well protected anchorage. The most memorable feature of our stay were the large herd/pod (herod ?) of seals and dolphins moving around the bay in one mass. Why were they together ? can't say, maybe feeding. Still Frances and Caroline spent considerable time in the dingy just floating around the middle of the "herod", receiving curious glances from seals turning onto their back to have a good look. They even had one dolphin touch the bottom of the dingy (which I doubt was an accident).
