Snow near the water
20 May 2012 | Akaroa Harbour, Banks Peninsula
Paul
After 11 days a weather window opened and we headed north to Akaroa Harbour on the Banks Peninsula. The forecast winds were less than expected but luckily we found the Yanmar current ( a euphemism for motoring). Managed to sail most of the night with the wind dead astern doing a little over 4 knots. Stronger SW winds arrived a couple hours out of Akaroa. The Southerly was forecast to increase so we anchored in Takamatua Bay, just north of French Bay where the main town is. It was 36 hours before we made it to shore as the weather deteriorated significantly - 30 to 40 knots with frequent hail storms. We even had snow on the hills surrounding the harbour - a taste of what is to come with winter. In 1992 we were told they had 3 metres of snow on the peninsula. When we made it to shore we asked for directions and were invited to drinks at Trevor and Gill's house overlooking the bay. We walked about 3k's into French Bay - the local urban centre. Pretty little town but priced for the tourist. The butcher had free range chickens for $29 !
