Yakutat

And I have a correction to make: I realize now that all the recent photographs have been either of glaciers or in the near vicinity of glaciers. The fact is that the weather is on the whole actually quite good and not particularly cold until you are within a few kilometres of the glacier itself. At that point the water temperature plummets to about 5 degrees C, the air temperature is around the same. So most of the rest of the time it's not chilly at all. We have had a great run of clear days which is not always the case but we are not complaining with our good luck. From Icy Bay we headed south east to Yakutat, about 65 miles away (130kms) but it took us 17 hours due to an adverse 2 knot current and unforecast Easterly headwinds.
Yakutat has a population of around 600 and there is no road access. It is a very popular destination for fishing expeditions, halibut, rockfish and salmon. At this point and after 3 months on board it is time for Gavin to leave and head back to NZ where he will prepare his yacht to sail back to Australia.
Thanks to the locals we now also have added a few more bear stories to our repertoire as well as one or two moose stories – gotta watch out for those moose it would seem. This place is as bad as Australia.
