Elfin Cove, Inside Passage

03 September 2015 | Elfin Cove, Inside Passage, Alaska
We have finally reached the general area that has been our intended destination for the last 16 months – The Inside Passage on the west coast of Alaska and Canada. Our voyage plan was to be out of the Gulf of Alaska by the 1st September – we were only 2 days late. Why ? The common wisdom is that generally after that date the weather starts to change for the worse - stronger winds and storms.

We started this voyage in May 2014 in New Zealand (16 months ago) and since then have sailed more than 12,000 nautical miles (24,000 kms), visited 10 different countries and have either moored or anchored at 140 different locations.

Q: What is our favourite place ?
A :Next question please (there are too many)

Q: Is there anywhere we want to go back to ?
A: The only place I wouldn't rush back to is Tarawa in Kiribati but glad we've seen it for ourselves. Mind you the people were extremely friendly.

Q: Would we do the voyage again ?
A: Yes, but only after we have seen everything else there is to see so it maybe some time.

The photo is of Elfin Cove just inside the northern entrance to the Inside Passage at Cross Sound. It is a “boardwalk town” and has for many years been the base of the small, mostly single-handed salmon trolling boats. In summer it is also a very busy with a number of fishing/hunting lodges doing brisk business. In winter around 12 people live here. As you can see for yourself – it's just OK.
