08 October 2015 | Fords Terror, Endicott Arm, Inside Passage

Continuing on south we turned east up Endicott Arm to see a glacier. Enroute Frances and Todd spied a place called "Fords Terror" and said "let's go"... so we did. It is a long narrow passage that has a "y" shape. The main passage is about 3 miles (6 kms) long and the other two arms are about 1.5 miles (3 kms) long each. The entrance at the bottom of the "y" and it is very narrow so ,with big tides, the currents can run up to 15 knots (30kph). It is only possible to transit it at slack water, high tide. Apparently it was named in 1889 after a ship's crewman took his dingy up the inlet to do some fishing and returned later somewhat relieved still to be alive. From what we have read not many people nowdays venture into this inlet due I suppose to the level of risk and remoteness. The anchorage we stayed at the night before was about 40 metres away from a very steep mountain and during the evening there was a landslide into the sea about 100 metres away..... Oh well as Todd says "you only live once".
Once anchored inside we ventured ashore without our BESP kit (Bear Encounter Survival Paraphernalia) because we all said "no bears could get in here, and why would they anyway?" Wrong. Luckily didn't encounter the bear but on our return to the dingy saw some fresh bear tracks....
We mounted a camera up the mast and took a time lapse film of us motoring up the inlet.
After spending over 20 years in the NT Paul and Frances returned to the sea in 2008. Their first trip was into the Pacific via West Papua and over the top of PNG and then back to Australia where they sold their old traditional boat "Sea Spray" and bought "Monkey Fist"
