Woody Woodpecker
14 March 2016 | Nanaimo, Vancouver Island, BC, Canada
Finally we were on our way north again - initially to Nanaimo on Vancouver Island to check back into Canada for the last time and pick us a part for the boat. We anchored at the nearby Newcastle Island for a night and managed to see our first woodpecker (a Pileated Woodpecker) - besides their distinctive habit of pecking they are also a rather memorable looking creature. This guy ( I think it's a guy) was pecking a hotplate on a barbeque. From what I understand they peck not just for food but for love too. The pecking is rather loud and we think that, when pecked, the steel of the hotplate resonated nicely thus attracting any lady woodpeckers in the area.
