Brookings - 400 miles south of Canada and 270 miles North of San Francisco

13 August 2016 | Brookings, Oregon, USA
Striking on down the coast with a forecast of 15 to 20 knots from the North West, the boys as the met bureau unfortunately got it wrong again and we barely had a breath of wind all day long. But, yes, we did manage more fog.

When we arrived at Brookings and spoke to the Coastguard officers they told us that they couldn't remember the last time a foreign boat had stopped there (other than Canadians, of course). I'm guessing it's because most foreigners can't find Brookings in the fog. In addition to the general foggy conditions along the west coast of the US, we were told about the Chetco River or Brookings Effect, which often results in local higher temperatures and no doubt, more fog in this particular area.

On a different subject, the tsunami that hit Fukisima in 2011 also has a significant effect on this side of the Pacific Ocean. The tidal surge caused much damage and some loss of life and we are told it was worse down the coast. There is a video on Youtube that clearly shows the magnitude of power that nature can unleash even at that distance and I've included the link on the left side of the page - also worth a look (Tsunami Wave hits Brookings).
