Eureka

19 August 2016 | Humboldt Bay, California, USA
We found this place quite interesting, even thought we had been told not to bother. It is a very industrial town/area certainly but it is quite spread out and we were able anchor near the 'old town' area. The omnipresent fog reduced our view for some time until after we anchored but when it cleared we could see some of the older buildings. As the name suggests, the opulent architecture was as a result of the fortunes accumulated by some people due to the cutting down of the huge redwood forests. The most well-known is the building at the bottom, which was built by a timber baron and is now a exclusive men's club (The Ingomar Club). For the few who know what I am talking about, I believe it would have been a fitting home for the NTP Swine Club (but of course there would be no sex discrimination). It is an impressive building.

On the other side of the coin in town we were surprized by the number of homeless people around this 'old town' area. It is sad to see and as a friend said "it's embarrassing to us, but not because of their appearance but because our society thinks it's acceptable not to take better care of them".
