Monterey Bay

08 September 2016 | Monterey Bay, California, USA
Santa Cruz, Moss Landing and the city of Monterey are dotted around the shores of this popular tourist area - surfing, diving, whale watching and kayaking. You will notice that I haven't mentioned the fog was back....

I can't say that I have ever seen a higher concentration of kayaks than in the Elkhorn Slough (pronounced slew). We counted 70 one morning - all out to see the Southern Sea Otters, Sea Lions and Harbour Seals that proliferate in the area. Near where we were moored was a raft of sea otters (around 30 in all) that was known locally as "the old boys club" - juvenile males mixed with the old timers lazing around whilst the alpha males were further up the slough tending their harems.

The middle photo is of a size 5 Harbour Seal on a size 4 rock. It must have been a pleasant perch because he was back there the following day.

Bottom photo: Judging by the self steering gear on her stern, the owner of this colourful 5 metre long 'yacht' had either done, or intended to do some serious cruising. Don't be too quick to laugh as people have crossed oceans in less - still much better them than me.
