Lata market

02 October 2018
The Late wharf market. I'd say 90% of the items for sale are either betelnuts or betelnut accoutraments - lime (bottles of burnt coral) and “mustard”. The mustard is dipped into the lime mixure and eaten at the same time as the betelnut to neutralize the acidity of the nut, it also turns the mouth and spit red. You can also buy a coconut to drink, Kumara (sweet potato), bananas, single cigarettes made from home grown tobacco, fish and chips (bonito and kumara) and tree nuts, which are one of our favourites. In the background is a local tramp steamer and a sunken Asian fishing boat that has been there for many years.
