ENTRANCE TO CORINTH CANAL: $350...EXPERIENCE OF TRANSITING IT: PRICELESS

For several days, we have been working out the logistics of the departure of the two Mikes...with flights out of Athens airport on 6/16. Issues revolved around getting them to an island where they can get transport to the airport. Finally, after pros and cons of the various options, we decided on moving through the islands a little more quickly so the whole crew, including the 2 Mikes, could experience the passage through the Canal which separates the mainland from the Peloponnisos and connects the Aegean to the Ionian Sea.
There were no places in Aegina to tie up. We decided on anchoring in a spot with only 2 other boats; being lazy and with an early start ahead, we didn't want to launch the dinghy, so dinner was on board: Captain Cook (a/k/a Captain Ken) made a fabulous meat lump and mashed taters; Jackie's Greek salad was delish. The meal was every bit as good, if not better, than our meals out. By the time we awoke in the morning, we were surrounded by some 20 other boats.
We got an early start just in case there were any issues which might hang us up. It was easy-peasy. We arrived at the entrance; the controller had us wait around for awhile. Like the Panama Canal, the Corinth is one-way, so boats at either end have to await their turn.
We were given the go-head to enter, tie-up and pay up: 305 euros. Yowser! Still no-go. We were told to wait 1/2 hour for our passage time. One and 1/2 hours later (Greek time), we were given the release. The car bridge which spans it was dropped down into the water (hopefully no cars were still on it) and off we went. The canal is 75 feet wide, flanked by high walls on either side with 4 bridges crossing above. The three mile trip took about 45 minutes, and it was worth every penny of the $7.77/minute.
