A PERFECT '10'

30 July 2015 | AGROPOLI, ITALY
LIL
Instead of pushing a long day to get to Capri, we decided to make the trip in 2 short days. Ken found a marina in Agropoli. He called in: No response. We pulled up and tied up to the fuel dock without embarrassing ourselves. The young attendant spoke no English, but we did manage to fuel up, and communicate that we would like a berth for one night (thanks to Google translate: avete un posto per una notte) Within minutes, Maxwell appeared and equipped with some English, let us know he would be waiting for us on pontoon 4. The three of us managed to tie up easily, helped by the fact that we were totally prepared in advance.

This town is quite large..and a beautiful from the water. The homes start at sea level but extend all the way up to the top of high cliffs. It was a walk to town in heat, heat, heat but we had a list: of course a chandlery for parts (yes, it is a boat), and a supermarket since we have crew arriving in a few days and our supplies of wine, beer, coke zero, and fresh goods are in need of replenishment.

Fortunately, we came upon a lovely young lady, who spoke perfect English, and is the town's one-person tourist bureau...a wealth of knowledge about all things Agropoli. She gave us maps of the area and advice regarding the location and hours of the various shops we needed. We hiked up to the supermarket which would offered free delivery to our to the boat, but unfortunately, it was still closed. These small towns still shut down mid-day and reopen in late afternoon. If life gives you lemons.....sit at a cafe and enjoy strawberry granita. Now refreshed, we walked back up to the supermarket, which looked like a little mini-market from the storefront but was, in fact, a very large store with aisles winding back from the street. Having successfully gotten most of what we needed, we headed back to Moonbeam to await the delivery. In short order, our treasures arrived and were loaded on the boat. As hard as it is to believe, the delivery man would not accept a tip!!!!

We were ready for dinner, so....back to town we walked. We by-passed several nice restaurants on the quay in favor of a pizzeria. We have been in Italy for over a week, and have yet to have pizza. (Those of you who know me from my prior life know that I ate (good) pizza five days a week for over 25 years...and sometimes for dinner as well.) On our expedition earlier in the day, I came across a cafe named 'American pizza' (believe it or not), but we turned that one down. Instead, we chose one on the quay overlooking the harbor and the beautiful sunset. There was only one other occupied table, so we got a front row seat. Just as we were ordering our caprese with buffalo mozzarella and pizza with broccoli rabe and sausage...and of course a bottle of red wine, my brother and sister-in-law, Randy and Joy, emailed me. They are in Berlin (same time zone) and were also sitting down to dinner. Randy asked if it was a good time for FaceTime...we said 'sure' and the next thing we knew, we were toasting each other and sharing pix of our food. How cool is that!!!! Dining together 1500 miles apart. By that time, the restaurant was packed with a waiting line. The food was superb, and the whole meal set us back 20 euros. This may have been (at least for me), the best meal of the trip.

It was hard to decide which pic to post since this blogsite only allows one per entry. There was the one of the 'American pizza' place, the town itself, the sunset...but the dinner won out. Why was it so good? The tomatoes on the caprese were like tomatoes from the fifties. (Yes, I do remember back that far.) The buffalo mozzarella was even better than from the Italian Deli on Marco...and the 7 euros red wine was a smooth as you can imagine.

So, all in all, the day was a '10' even though we didn't get to sail. I've taken the sailing criteria out of the equation...or else no day would be a '10'. We go north, the winds are non-existent or from the north. We go south, the winds are non-existent or from the south. We head north again.....you know the story. But...I can't let something I can do nothing about spoil an otherwise perfect day and romantic dinner. And..if we actually had a 20 knot beam reach wind, it would have been an '11' (or maybe a '12').

Oh yes, and, we walked over 13,000 steps as measured on my Fitbit!
