THE BALANCE IN LIFE
02 September 2015 | ALCUDIAMAR, MAJORCA
So....yes, we've anchored in lovely, local harbors which are idyllic but...every once in awhile, a real marina beckons. As we set out for Mallorca, we started calling for a marina slip. Our best shot seemed to be a marina with 760 berths. We called early in the morning. They said they only had one slip available...and they wouldn't hold it for us. Another marina never answered and so it went. As we neared, we gave marina one another call. Yes...they had one slip...for a 20 meter boat (we are 15 meters). OK. We'll play. How much? 93 euros. (We've paid more for less. We're in.) As it turned out, the issue wasn't so much the higher rate but the shorter mooring line. Not to worry. The dock hand came on Moonbeam and together, we jury rigged an additional line to make up for the shortfall. It was all good.
We've been to too many marinas which seemed to be good ideas, but never quite made it. This one, in Alcudia, walks the talk. Every storefront is occupied. There are dozens of boutique shops and restaurants...not to mention the many, many chandleries. (Captain Ken's fantasy fulfilled.) Even now in September (yeah...summer is over, except for southern Florida), there are many family vacationers, and lots of energy. There is a kiddie playground with bounce houses, trampolines, bungee gizmos, and other fun stuff. The cafes and restaurants are buzzing; this stop is a '10'. Captain Fuzzy (a/k/a Captain Ken) gave up 10 years of his life with a good hair and brow cut. No...he didn't let them trim his 'stashe. He still wants to be known as Captain Mustachio.
After a delicious dinner last night, topped off with Captain Ken (a dance master) dancing with the server, and getting a gratis to-go bottle of local wine for his efforts, we did the walk, (paseo) and called it a day.
So now, the good (I guess) news is that they have mechanics ready to take us out of 'boat-issue' misery. Ken went over to the marina office...and 2 mechanics have moved in for the day, to cater to our every need. And...we have a few!!! (It's a boat.)
So, you may recall that I've made a few comments in prior blogs about how fortunate we 'east-coasters' and SW Florida residents are regarding beaches. We are truly blessed with having (IMHO) the best beaches in the world. That said, the beaches here are not bad....in fact, much better than we've seen. I was almost tempted........
