I WASN'T PLANNING ON WRITING A BLOG TODAY BUT....

LIL

As you may have noticed from my somewhat quirky-themed blogs, I tend not to write one if it will read like 'we went here...and then we went there...and then...'. It's boring for me to write, and to read, and it would be even more so for you, Moonbeamers. I hate to sound jaded, but some days can be wonderful...but not necessarily interesting to people who weren't there. So, I thought today would be one of those days, and I would take a day off from blogging.
For the past few days, Ken and I have been baby-sitting boat repairs, so Bob and Lorelei went over to Palma to spend the time at a very nice resort hotel, overlooking a marina on the Med.....perhaps the best of all worlds: in a marina but not on a boat. I guess they wanted some creature comforts which (believe it or not) even Moonbeam doesn't provide.
With the work done, we picked up a rental car (well...actually they delivered it to our dock) and we set out to meet Bob and Lorelei in Port De Soller, as had been recommended as a 'must-see' by some dock mates in Menorca. Bob and Lorelei took an old-fashioned train and trolley from Palma, and we arrived there within minutes of each other. On the trip over, Ken and I had two choices as to which route to take: the autostrada (as recommended by the rental agent) and the squiggly mountain roads through the Tramuntana mountain range. If you've been following the blogs, you know that Captain Ken chose the latter. Good decision. The road through the mountains was beautiful: high mountains, steep forest-shrouded cliffs, lush valleys, and a few small towns along the way, built with local stone and blending harmoniously with the topography surrounding them ..many olive groves and terrassed vineyards, and...dry stone walls like we saw in Menorca. The weather was iffy...it had poured last night....but it got better and better as we crossed the mountains, and there were wonderful photo ops.
In Port De Soller, we met up, we dined on tapas...every dish we picked was a good choice...but, the server predicted a storm coming in, so we drove Bob and Lorelei back to their hotel in Palma and had coffee and dessert on the terrace overlooking the marina and the mega-yachts. We couldn't sit on the cushioned couches, since they were all taken inside because of the impending storm. Ken and I left to drive back...with our sunglasses on! Storm? What storm?
As we drove, we could see some weather moving in; in fact, it did look ominous. Within 15 kilometers of Alcúdiamar (our marina), the traffic slowed to a crawl. Friday night Hamptons traffic? No...it is September. Friday night rush hour? No, they don't do that. They work from 8-1 and 4-8. No five o'clock crunch for them. It was road flooding. In some spots, there was a foot or more of the muddy stuff. The sides of the road had rivers....which were not there earlier in the day. So, in the end, we lost about thirty minutes (according to Mini-Muffin, my phone's GPS,) but it was fine. As Bob says, "no one got hurt...and the equipment is still usable."
I guess it's gonna' be a movie night on Moonbeam.
