THE CONUNDRUM

When we're very busy, I may have a lot to write about, but no time to write. When I have a lot of time to write, it means we haven't been doing much and I (yes, Ken...even I) have nothing to say....so you can infer from my silence over the past few days that we have been busy. I'll try to correct the error of my ways by posting a few updates today since, I'm sitting in a car on a five hour ride from Madrid to Benalmádena and, as our friend Edie says, what else do I have to do?
For some background: We have a friend, Harry, who is 92, lives in NYC and has been wintering in Torremolinos (near Benalmádena) for over 30 years. He stays at the same hotel on the beach, in the same room overlooking the Med. Everyone at the Hotel Bajondillo knows him; he is the de facto mayor. As guests arrive, they all get to meet him; they strike up a friendship...and he gives them the skinny on everything they need to know to enhance their stay. Six evenings each week, there is a show with a lovely singer, Ana Mary, and Harry goes to the show, takes pictures of the guests (with 'film' which he has developed...remember those days) and he gives the guests their prints. When he is there alone, the single 'chicks' ask him to dance and he accommodates them. Sometimes, he dances with Ana Mary, the singer. For big events, like Christmas, they put on a special show...and Harry is the star. For his birthday in March, they make a big party for him. This has been going on for 30 years. Now, all of these years later...Harry, his special friend Anne, and Ana Mary have all aged...but it's like getting together with our childhood friends; no one notices that anyone has aged since we're all aging at the same rate.
Harry arrived in Torremolinos last week, ready for the winter season. Now, living in Florida, I know many people who were snowbirds...migrating back and forth every year...and, after a few years of it, got tired of the organizing, packing and schlepping...and packed it in and moved down full time...and, they were a lot younger than Harry. But, God bless him, Harry still makes the yearly pilgrimage, now at 92. Wednesday evening, Harry's friend Anne, our adopted son, Guillermo, the Captain and I went over to the Bajondillo to see Harry and enjoy the show....and, what a show it was! Ana Mary was as good as ever, and, as the Captain will confirm, still looks hot with fabulous legs, even being, let's just say, only a few years away from Medicare. Harry and Anne worked the dance floor, the regulars came over to him and paid homage...and the single 'Chicks' jealously glowered when they saw that Harry was with Anne. You just had to be there.
