It was really windy today! You might think we like that because we are on a sailboat, but right now wind means cold and that we do not like at all. We are still looking for warmth. We thought we found it in South Carolina but we were wrong. Three days in Georgia and it hasn’t really been very warm here either. The wind did help us a bit today though. We are still just using our jib sail because it is easier than trying to put up the main sail when you are cold. It does give us a little bit more speed.
Georgia has more inlets to the ocean than the other states we have been going through. That translates to more open water and more motion. Add the wind to that and we had a bit of a wild day. We decided we wanted to stop and see Fort Frederica today. You have to time it well because you anchor and then take your dinghy to their dock. For two hours either side of low tide their dock is just a mud flat with no way to get your dinghy in or out. You don’t want to get stuck there at low tide. We timed it well, anchored Moonraker and fought the wind in our dinghy. Fort Frederica is an archeological site from a military town built by the British to defend their land in Georgia from the Spaniards in Florida in the 1730s and 1740s. It was pretty interesting. We were glad we stopped.
We got back to the boat and went off looking for our next anchorage. We weren’t sure we would make it here but we got to Jekyll Island before sunset. Bill took the great picture above shortly after we anchored. It is really pretty here. We will check out the town and the famous sea turtle hospital tomorrow.
