To Hell With the Grandkids!
29 July 2013 | Hells Half Acre, Maine
Donna
We woke up to light fog this morning and took our time getting ready to go. The weather wasn’t very good, even without the fog. We motored part of the way and sailed part of the way. We got totally fogged in while we were sailing and had to turn on the automatic fog horn with the sailing switch this time. I thought the kids would really think it was cool but they weren’t that impressed.
Grandpop Bill told the kids we were going to Hell today. Now we are there, a small group of islands called Hells Half Acre. We were here by ourselves a few weeks ago, but we called it Devil Island then. Hells Half Acre sounds so much cooler. The picture above shows the kids walking around one of the islands. That is our dinghy on the right. Tomorrow we are going to explore the islands at low tide. This picture was taken near high tide – you can see the water line on the rocks. The tide here is about ten feet.
We tried to catch a lobsterman so we could buy some lobster for dinner tonight. There was one working near us but he didn’t respond to our horns or waves. Bill heard a kayaker ask him if she could buy lobster from him and he apparently said no. We have heard that most of the lobstermen are happy to sell to boaters because they get paid more than they can from wherever they usually sell them. Maybe tomorrow…
