Starting Our Way Back South
12 August 2013 | Carver Cove, Vinalhaven, Maine
Donna
Last night all we wanted was to have a calm anchorage that was in the right direction. We have been circling the Penobscot Bay for more than a month now. Our chart plotter shows the tracks of where we have been and they cross and overlap all over the place. After we dropped off our guests we headed across the East Penobscot Bay and anchored in Carver Cove. We were right behind where the wind turbine towers are located in Vinalhaven. We’ve seen the towers from all different angles, but never the angle in the picture above. These particular turbines are apparently controversial, but I think they are very cool.
We left this morning for one last trip to Rockland to do laundry and provision a bit more. We’ve been to Rockland three times this summer. We’ve got the town all figured out. We had some crazy logistics today though. We know where everything we need is by now, unfortunately our needs were on two different ends of the town and we are only staying the one day. We came into the public town dock to get rid of our trash and recycling and to go to the marine store. Then we walked to the other side of town to start our laundry. There is another dinghy dock much closer to the Laundromat, which is across the street from the supermarket. Rather than carry all our laundry and groceries through town we set our clothes to wash and then walked back across town to the dinghy and drove it over to the dock closer to the Laundromat. Of course we stopped at the McDonalds that we went by to get a milkshake to make the walk a bit easier. You would think all that exercise is good for us until you read that part about the milkshake!
Tomorrow our plan is to be at the fuel dock before it opens at 8am. We’ve cased out the best fuel dock in Rockland, which in our minds is the one that is easiest to get the boat into. We don’t care about how much the diesel costs, we just want to have an easy approach to the dock. After that we will start our way south, hopefully stopping at Port Clyde tomorrow.
