Puffins!!!

15 August 2013 | Ridley Cove, Casco Bay, Maine
Donna
Yesterday was another foggy day. We decided to stay in Port Clyde and not venture out into the fog. By the afternoon the fog was gone so we went back to town and walked to the lighthouse. We apparently missed the turn on the way there and took the long way. It was a nice afternoon though, and a pretty walk. The lighthouse was a bit of a disappointment. We hadn’t really seen it when we went by it by boat since it was so foggy, if we had we might not have bothered walking to it.

On the way back we took the right route. We walked past a small farm stand, always a favorite of mine since I’m always looking for fresh vegetables. Nothing called to me though so we decided not to buy anything. That is when, for the second time in our cruising life, Bill found a credit card lying on the ground. Always ready to do a good deed he decided we should take it up to the house of the woman who was running the farm stand. She was very willing to help out too so the two of them brainstormed the best way to deal with the issue. In the end she called the number on the credit card and they called the people who dropped it. As far as we know they went back to the house and picked it up. Hopefully all ended well.

This morning we left relatively early. At this point we have had enough of Maine. We’ve been cruising all around the coast for close to two months and we are ready to be further south. Today was a nice clear day and there was the promise of wind to sail. First though we wanted to go around Eastern Egg Rock. While we were in Rockland we had spent a little time in the Puffin Project headquarters and we had learned that this island, that we would go by today, had a colony of puffins living on it. There is a project underway to bring the puffins back to the area and they have had some success on a couple of the islands here. Everyone told us it was too late in the summer to see them, they were most likely gone by now. We decided to check it out anyhow. We made a couple of loops around the island, it isn’t very big. We didn’t see many puffins but we did see some. It is obvious when you see one because of their big orange beak. The picture above is of a couple of puffins in the water. Bill managed to enlarge one so you can see it better.

We sailed for a good bit of the day and now we are in Casco Bay. We are anchored in a nice calm cove for the night. There are not a lot of places to anchor that you don’t have to go far up a river to get to. We are not sure where we will be tomorrow but Saturday we are planning on going to Portland to have dinner with one of the former Midshipmen we sponsored in Annapolis.

Extra:
Moonraker was built in 1986 and had two owners before we bought her in 2005. After spending nearly two years on the hard making all the repairs and improvements that I had promised Donna we wouldn’t have to do if we bought her, we were finally ready to go sailing. For the next several years we [...]
