Gloucester For A Few Days

22 August 2013 | Gloucester, Massachusetts
Donna
We had a great couple of days at Star Island. We met a lot of good people and even made some new friends who live on the ICW down in Florida. We are learning that it’s always good to have friends along the way. We decided to make a dramatic exit when we left on Wednesday morning so we sailed off of the mooring. We had to briefly use the engine to avoid hitting the boat moored next to us but we turned it off as soon as we were clear. We sailed for quite a distance but then we had to switch to the engine for a while. Sadly we didn’t see any whales on the way, we understand they are on their way south already. We were able to sail again as we got closer to Gloucester.

We are now anchored in Gloucester Harbor. You can see us in the middle of the picture above. It’s a cute town. We had pizza for dinner last night and did a recon on the restaurants, Laundromat, and shops. Bill always is on the lookout for a good place to buy bread. I really think we have eaten more bread on this trip than in the last five years of our lives on land. He saw someone with what looked like a loaf of bread and stopped him to ask where he bought it. After we got the info on that he moved onto places to eat breakfast this morning. We took both of their suggestions. As it turns out, the bread was a good recommendation, the breakfast place not as good, unless you like raw onions in your omelette…

We got our laundry done this afternoon. The Laundromat was very nice, not nearly as good as the one in Rockland, Maine, but still nice. On our walk last night we found a community movie theater that looked interesting. They don’t have first run movies but the movies looked promising. We haven’t been out to the movies in a long time. They had a matinee this afternoon for a movie the owner told us was a great comedy out of Canada. We thought, why not. It was a warm afternoon, we could go sit in the movie theater for a while. It was a cute theater with sofas and comfortable chairs instead of theater seats. We should not have been so surprised that the movie was in French… (with subtitles of course) It had, what sounded like, an American title: Starbuck. It was a good movie. Don’t watch it with kids…

We discovered yesterday that we can get decent TV reception again. Too bad, life without the TV was kind of nice. Tonight there is a pre-season football game on. Bill is trying to get into it but I guess he is just not ready for football yet. Tomorrow we will head south again. We were going to go to Salem but from what Bill found online it seems too touristy and expensive.

This blog will record our adventures as we continue our new cruising life. This summer (2013) we plan to head north and explore the coasts of Maine and Nova Scotia. We will return to Annapolis in the fall for the SSCA GAM and then head south on the ICW to Florida. [...]
Extra:
Moonraker was built in 1986 and had two owners before we bought her in 2005. After spending nearly two years on the hard making all the repairs and improvements that I had promised Donna we wouldn’t have to do if we bought her, we were finally ready to go sailing. For the next several years we [...]
