The Wind Is Not Our Friend

The wind has had it in for us the past two days. Even though yesterday was a beautiful warm day, there was no wind. It makes it tough to show off your sailboat when there is no wind. Our friends came to Scituate to go sailing with us and we went out into the ocean, and sat there…. We couldn’t even fill the spinnaker. We didn’t even try any of the other sails. We all had a nice time anyhow, despite the lack of wind.
This morning we got up early and were off the mooring before 6:30am. We had a great sail for the five hours it took us to get to the Cape Cod Canal and then, when we turned in, the wind was on our nose, and way too strong. To make it worse we were going against the strong current in the canal and were not even able to go three knots for most of the way. Our plan was to go non-stop through the canal, down Buzzards Bay, along Rhode Island Sound and up Long Island Sound to Oyster Bay, arriving there tomorrow afternoon. After our lovely time trying to negotiate the canal Bill went down to the nav station to do some recalculating. The weather report indicated that the strong wind would continue in the wrong direction until early morning. No sense in beating ourselves up, that would be very unpleasant. So now we are anchored in Oncet which is right off the canal. Thanks for the tip Solmar! You can see the canal in the picture above, taken from our anchorage. The wind turbine is next to the Massachusetts Maritime Academy which is right on the canal, and the bridge is a train bridge over the canal which is generally in the raised position unless a train is coming. It is much calmer in here, although the wind is still howling. We are hoping for a calm night and then we will leave early again tomorrow and hope to get to Oyster Bay in time for lunch on Wednesday with one of my oldest girlfriends. And by that I mean, a girlfriend I have had for a long time, she is not old! She is my age!!
