A Birthday Trip Down the East River

29 August 2013 | Port Washington, New York
Donna
We had a great trip from the Cape Cod Canal to Port Washington. We left Onset early on Tuesday morning and got to the Long Island Sound around late afternoon. We were able to sail a little bit but mostly it was a power boat ride. The Sound was nice and smooth. We were remembering our trip from last year and it wasn’t like that at all. Wind and current are very powerful. Luckily there wasn’t a lot of wind this time. We motored all night and got into Oyster Bay in the morning. Bill is playing with our watch schedule and we did five hours on and five hours off through the night this time. It would have worked OK except my five hours was 1am to 6am. I couldn’t really go to sleep when it was Bill’s morning watch because we were pulling into port and he needed my help. Bill wasn’t tired, he had just woken up! We were meeting my friend Mindy for lunch so I did get a chance to sleep a little. We anchored in Oyster Bay which is close to where Mindy lives on Long Island. She came and picked us up and we went to a nice little restaurant in the town where we caught up on all our family stories. When we got back to the boat it looked like a thunderstorm was coming. We needed to fill up our diesel tank so we managed to get to the fuel dock and out before any storm hit. Luckily it never really rained. We continued up the Long Island Sound and got a free mooring for the night in the cruiser friendly town of Port Washington. The yellow mooring balls, as you see in the picture above, are free for two nights.

Today is Bill’s birthday! We started the day off with Bill playing the now age appropriate Beatles song. He had two possible breakfast restaurants to check out in town. The one that was close didn’t look that great so we walked to the further one. Whoops – they were closed due to electrical problems. We weren’t eating there today! We managed to find a decent diner further up Main Street, across the street from where Mindy told us was a good Optometrist’s shop to get Bill’s glasses fixed at. After that we went back to the public dinghy dock and took our dinghy across to the other dock next to the supermarket. We will be home soon and didn’t need too much, but there are always things you can get when a supermarket is so easily accessible.

We are leaving shortly to catch the right current on the East River through New York. We will be going through at rush hour again, which probably will make it even more exciting as we dodge past ferries. We are most likely going to continue through the night and make our way down the Jersey coast to Barnegat. The winds are supposed to be very favorable tonight for sailing. We will see….

Extra:
Moonraker was built in 1986 and had two owners before we bought her in 2005. After spending nearly two years on the hard making all the repairs and improvements that I had promised Donna we wouldn’t have to do if we bought her, we were finally ready to go sailing. For the next several years we [...]
