MOLD!!!

17 September 2013 | Hillsmere Marina, Annapolis, Maryland
Donna
Looking at the calendar it shows that we’ve been home for exactly two weeks today. It sure feels a lot longer than that. We’ve done so much. Before the first night was over we bought a used car from an Annapolis car dealer. It was great, the salesman came and picked us up at the marina and worked with us to be sure it was a good car. It seemed like a good deal but like any car it is not without its problems. We had it back to the dealer twice in the first two days. It is basically a good car though, and it will get us through whatever we want to do with it.

We both came back to Annapolis with a hacking cough and feeling horrible. Bill’s started first but, for maybe the first time, mine was worse this time. Regardless of how we felt we had reservations to take our daughter, her family, and my mother to Great Wolf Lodge in the Poconos for the weekend. Great Wolf Lodge is an indoor water park and I highly recommend it to anyone who has kids who just love the water, like my grandsons do. It was a long ride, and I basically stood in water for two days straight, but we all had a good time. I didn’t even fight much when Bill made me do all the crazy water slide rides that they have there, including the Double Barrel Drop. We were still sick though. A week later we were at our daughters’ house again, still coughing. No one else got sick. When I mentioned to our daughter that we had found a mold issue on the boat our daughter said that was obviously why we were coughing. That made us think about it a bit more. Next we had to go back to the boat and see how bad it was.

We took all our cushions off the boat and moved back into our friends’ basement. We started moving stuff around and found that we do indeed have a mold problem. It isn’t as bad as it could have been but it is bad enough that we had to move everything around and clean all the compartments with a combination of laundry detergent and borax. Then we sprayed everything with a mold control spray. The picture above is one of the berths getting the treatment. In the process we are taking things off the boat that we don’t really feel the need for. I think this time more things are coming off than are going on. It is not a fun process but it’s one that definitely needed to be done. We think in the future we need to pay more attention to what is in our storage and clean it out more often.

We managed to get some good family time in before the hard work began, but now we need to get serious about doing boat work if we think we are going to leave by the end of the month. We didn’t expect to have to the massive cleaning we are doing, but it was definitely necessary.

Moonraker was built in 1986 and had two owners before we bought her in 2005. After spending nearly two years on the hard making all the repairs and improvements that I had promised Donna we wouldn’t have to do if we bought her, we were finally ready to go sailing. For the next several years we [...]
