Moonraker

This blog chronicles the adventures of the sailing vessel Moonraker. We just finished the second year of our cruising life. We explored the US East Coast from Maine to Florida, the Bahamas, Haiti, PR, and the Virgin Islands.

Not a Very Good Night

07 November 2013 | Fernandina Beach, Florida
Donna
Despite a good weather report and not terribly strong winds the ocean was not a fun place to be yesterday or today, at least for us. Bill was feeling kind of sea sick but I had it much worse. This was the first time we’ve been offshore that we didn’t even attempt to eat dinner. I had already fed the fish my breakfast and lunch, there was no point in me eating anything else. Unfortunately even though my stomach was empty I continued to have seasickness bouts throughout the night. Neither of us were totally incapacitated though. I was worried because this was the first time we were both seasick at the same time. Bill managed to pull himself through and do everything necessary to get us to our destination. I think the only thing I managed to do was to allow Bill to have a couple decent hours of sleep. As you can see above, Bill even managed to get a picture of the sunset, I was taking a nap at the time. For a while we had another sailboat in front of us but at some point they must have turned in a different direction.

This morning we came into the inlet along with a couple other sailboats. We turned left at the ICW and dropped our anchor in Fernandina Beach. We both felt miserable. We had a quick breakfast and went to sleep for a few hours. There is a lot of recovery that goes with completing an ocean passage. We had put our dinghy over the cabin top because we didn’t want it in the davits in case there were big waves. This is the first time we have done this with our new dinghy. The old dinghy folded up into a big package which we then dragged down below and put on my berth. The new dinghy has a hard bottom so you can’t fold it up. We bought it because it is small enough to fit over our butterfly hatch if you deflate the sides. The work involved is a little less strength intensive than with the old dinghy. It’s still a lot of work though. The boat is still somewhat of a mess but Bill and I have had showers and a nice dinner in Fernandina Beach at this point. This is one of those places where we have found a favorite breakfast spot so that is definitely in the plan for tomorrow. Then off to Jacksonville to see friends of mine from junior high and high school.

About:
This blog will record our adventures as we continue our new cruising life. This summer (2013) we plan to head north and explore the coasts of Maine and Nova Scotia. We will return to Annapolis in the fall for the SSCA GAM and then head south on the ICW to Florida. [...]
Extra:
Moonraker was built in 1986 and had two owners before we bought her in 2005. After spending nearly two years on the hard making all the repairs and improvements that I had promised Donna we wouldn’t have to do if we bought her, we were finally ready to go sailing. For the next several years we [...]
