Moonraker

This blog chronicles the adventures of the sailing vessel Moonraker. We just finished the second year of our cruising life. We explored the US East Coast from Maine to Florida, the Bahamas, Haiti, PR, and the Virgin Islands.

Mission Aborted

15 December 2013 | Lake Sylvia, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida
Donna
Well, we got up on time and left the anchorage only a few minutes later than we expected. The boat was in great shape and we were ready to go. The inlet was a bit rough but no one got sea sick and all seemed to be going well. Then Bill went down to turn on the watermaker. We wanted to be sure that it was working. We had been advised not to use it in the ICW so the last time we had it on it was working. This morning it was not. We were about ten miles out in the ocean when we decided we had better turn around and head back.

We could have gotten the watermaker fixed in the Bahamas but it would definitely have been more of a hassle and more expensive. We could exist without having a watermaker but then we would not be able to go to a lot of the places we wanted to go and we don’t really have the right equipment for getting that much water on board our boat. We weren’t happy about it but turning around was the best decision for the two of us. Now we are right back in our anchorage spot in Lake Sylvia just a few feet from where we were anchored before. At least we get to watch football today. The picture above was taken on the way back in. That boat is looking better and better right now…. And yes – that is a giant TV screen on the top.

We don’t know when the next weather window will be but it doesn’t look like it will be in the next week. Hopefully we will make the most of our time here and get some things done that we won’t have to worry about when (and if) we make it to the Bahamas.

Extra:
Moonraker was built in 1986 and had two owners before we bought her in 2005. After spending nearly two years on the hard making all the repairs and improvements that I had promised Donna we wouldn’t have to do if we bought her, we were finally ready to go sailing. For the next several years we [...]
