Decided to Stop On the Other Side of Long Island
23 February 2014 | Little Harbour, Long Island, Bahamas
Donna
We spent the morning rushing through doing all the things we probably should have been doing the last few days. Finally we were all set for going offshore. The boat was ready, we were ready. We left the anchorage and headed south along Long Island. It is very well named because it really is a very long island. We had originally decided we weren't going to leave Clarence Town until Monday because if we were going to have to motor sail anyhow we might as well wait for the wind to be lower. For some reason we changed our minds though and decided to leave today. Well it wasn't rough, but it wasn't very comfortable either. There was no way we could sail and the main sail wasn't helping much even though we had it up. I always ask if there are any alternatives if we decided to wait until when we had planned to go. Bill went down below to investigate and found a wonderful protected anchorage about a half hour from where we were on the other side of Long Island.
So , now we are anchored in Little Harbour. It is beautiful in here and probably the calmest anchorage we've had in weeks. There is only one other boat in here, a catamaran from Canada that has been here for an entire month with their five kids. There would be six kids but the oldest one went off to college. Bill and I went snorkeling off the boat but there wasn't really much to see but the anchor and the bottom of the boat, which was actually pretty cool. Since he already had all his gear on, and it was so calm, Bill decided to clean the bottom of the boat. He had noticed some barnacles growing as we swam by it. He has a device called the SeaBreathe that lets him scuba dive while he is connected to the boat. It plugs into the cigarette lighter connector and supplies him air through the hose and the regulator as you can see in the picture above.
We will head out again tomorrow and give the trip south and east another try.
