This blog chronicles the adventures of the sailing vessel Moonraker. We just finished the second year of our cruising life. We explored the US East Coast from Maine to Florida, the Bahamas, Haiti, PR, and the Virgin Islands.

School Supplies for Ile A Vache

07 March 2014 | Ile A Vache, Haiti
Donna
When we were researching coming to Ile A Vache the cruising guide we read said to bring school supplies for the kids because they had so little here. We were in Georgetown in the Bahamas and there actually was a small store that had school supplies there. We bought a box of twenty composition books, some pencils and sharpeners, and some crayons. The man who ran the store gave us a significant discount because we were going to bring them to children in need, he even threw in a couple of bottles of bubbles. So we have carried these supplies on board for months, competing for space, in anticipation of today.

Samuel, the SSCA Cruising Station host here wanted to get some kids together so we could make the presentation. School was closed this week for Carnival so this was going to work out well for us. We settled on a time this morning but Samuel is a busy man on this island and he was involved with the medical mission they have going on here right now and was called away. We ran into him later and we resettled on meeting at 4:30pm. We weren't quite sure what to expect but he had the place full of kids. Samuel wasn't quite sure about the bubbles, he had never seen them before so Bill demonstrated. Either the kids were aware of what they were or they just catch on fast because they had no trouble figuring out what to do with them. They distributed the rest of the supplies and the kids seemed happy to have them. We took the picture above, I am hiding behind a composition book.

Tomorrow we are going to leave here and head to the south coast of the Dominican Republic. We should get there sometime on Sunday. We have very much enjoyed our time on Ile A Vache and are glad we decided to stop here.

Extra:
Moonraker was built in 1986 and had two owners before we bought her in 2005. After spending nearly two years on the hard making all the repairs and improvements that I had promised Donna we wouldn’t have to do if we bought her, we were finally ready to go sailing. For the next several years we [...]
